With its new transmitter, the Colombian radio station Stereo Star is ready to increase its capacity and even adopt digital radio technology in the future.
At the end of 2016 the station of the city of Medellin, Star Stereo, malfunctioned, but the lightning strike damaged the main transmitter and the emergency transmitter, the power plant, the panel automatic transfer and destroyed in their entirety transient suppressor.
Fernando Arbelaez, engineer of the station, said that this incident left off the air to the station, forcing take immediate action. After conducting a full review of the facility, it was found that there was no damage to the antenna, transmission line or mark the receptor binding Marti, making the decision to buy a transmitter 1kW was taken.
The manufacturer Broadcast Electronics, through its Jaime Sorzano Broadcast Equipment and Parts distributor, was selected by the Colombian radio station brand for replacement transmitter, choosing the model STX LP Generation II 1 kW. Daniel Bizet, sales director for Latin America of the manufacturer, noted that this is a transmitter of last generation, offering many features that motivated the engineer Fernando Arbelaez and his directive to make the investment.
Keeping high quality
Stereo Star has always maintained a very good audio quality due to a prudent processing and handling characteristics thereof by liaison teams and modulator. So when repair this damage introduced in late 2016, directives station decided on a technology that would allow them to quickly repair the damage, maintain the quality that characterizes them and to be prepared for future requirements.
"Broadcast Electronics was chosen because of the experience taken in previous years in terms of the quality of equipment, and technical and price support. Also joined the effort by the manufacturer for delivery against computer clock, and through the intervention of the company Broadcast Equipment, which managed to take the team nationalized in 10 days, "said Fernando Arbelaez.
To repair the damage caused by lightning systems of the station, the only resources that could be used were the antenna system, the receptor binding and obviously the infrastructure. The other teams were severely damaged and in some cases irreparable.
The installed technology
Daniel Bizet commented that the installed equipment is a solid-state transmitter, which has a compact design and is scalable in power, just add modules and RF combiner. Each RF module has its source of power and the exciter is digital, compatible with HD Radio transmissions or DRM +. Moreover, the transmitter offers all the input audio formats such as AES / EBU, analog channel L / R analog composite input and also digital composite input, and thus offers excellent audio quality.
One of the features offered by this line of transmitters, is that it has a scalable design power, ie, if a transmitter 1kW buy, you can increase power to 2kW, 3kW or until 5kW, just add RF modules and the combiner to the desired power. Additionally, silence has a sensor that detects the absence of audio, automatically switching to another audio input. Another feature offered by the transmitter, RDS is a generator to operate statically and dynamically.
The transmitter BE STX LP series also offers connectivity via IP, with a new GUI (Graphical User Interface) software that facilitates the handling of the transmitter via an IP connection from your PC, tablet or smartphone. It also offers connectivity using the SNMP protocol, level 3 for greater control and security.
Another important aspect to highlight is that the transmitter is on the front panel, a block diagram with the operation. This function displays on the front panel, the various stages of operation of the transmitter, which enables the user to stage fault detection
Everything to normal
After the difficulties faced by damage to the transmission system of the transmitter, Stereo Star today operates without any inconvenience. Even the technology implemented allowed for savings in consumption of energy, be more efficient equipment. In addition, it is a huge benefit that allows the user to connect remotely to the transmitter to verify its operation.
Daniel Bizet commented that "an important aspect to highlight, although in Colombia radio stations are not broadcasting digital signal is that this transmitter is compatible with digital technology, its known current formats such as HD Radio and DRM +, which would facilitate in future implementation. "
Another advantage of facing the future, when the transmitter is finally increased power, is that it is modular, if one module fails, the transmitter continues to transmit at lower power, ensuring continuity of service.
On the operation of the system after the intervention highlighted the engineer Stereo Star that "In the short time elapsed, its performance has been excellent, because we have not had any problems so far. The scalability offered by STX LP transmitter series allows us to increase the power of our FM transmitter in the future, as soon as the authorities grant us said increase. "
